Pidurangala Rock Hike: An Alternative To Climbing Sigiriya

Sigiriya Rock is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic and busiest landmarks with thousands of tourists flocking there to claim it as one of their Sri Lanka highlights. There is, however, a lesser-known but just as worthy gem, Pidurangala, which offers a similar but unique view without the crowds.

The Pidurangala Rock hike is a fantastic alternative to climbing Sigiriya Rock, especially for those seeking a more budget friendly option that still has majestic views. We completed this hike in late March with our kids and recommend an early start as the panoramic views at sunrise are well worth getting up for.

Pidurangala Rock: History

Pidurangala Rock is a volcanic rock formation reaching 200 metres in the heart of Sri Lanka. Its fascinating history is inextricably linked with its more famous neighbour, Sigiriya Rock.

During the 5th century, King Kashyapa built a defensive citadel on Sigiriya and relocated the resident monks to Pidurangala, where he built them a monastery inside a cave. It is believed King Kashyapa was cremated by the stupa at Pidurangala.

Nowadays, people climb Pidurangala mainly because of the stunning panoramic views over the untouched landscape and, of course, to get the best view of Sigiriya Rock.

What To Expect When Hiking Pidurangala

We arrived by tuk-tuk from our hotel in Sigiriya before the first light at 0530. We remembered to bring a head torch as it was pitch black.

The hike to the summit takes approximately 30min and the trail starts at the ticket booth before ascending the steps past Pidurangala Temple. The temple is located in a long, low-ceilinged cave with a large reclining Buddha dominating the space. If you are heading up for sunrise, view the temple on your way back down when there is plenty of light.

The trail becomes more rugged after passing the cave temple, with several big boulders between you and the summit. These require some fairly easy climbing and care to traverse safely. Depending on your fitness and mobility, you may need a helping hand. Take your time, and be patient if there is a queue.

We sat for 30 minutes as the day broke and the sun rose before we could fully appreciate the view. You can spend as much time as you wish at the summit, taking in one of the best views in Sri Lanka.

Take care with your footing when on the top, as the rock can be slippery, especially if it’s wet. There are sheer drops on all sides, so keep an eye on your kids and don’t be tempted to stand too close to the edge. Depending on the weather, you may find dogs, monkeys or even snakes to keep you company!

Return by the same route, remembering to take your shoes off and cover up your shoulders and legs if you enter the cave temple.

Tip – Aim to start the hike early to catch the sunrise. Due to the possibility of encountering wild elephants in Sigiriya, walking to or from the rock during darkness is not advisable.

Pidurangala Rock Or Sigiriya Rock

Both Sigirya and Pidurangala are protruding, extinct volcanic rocks within 2kms of each other in Sri Lanka. While they share a rich history and mythology, Sigiriya rock has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1982 and draws far more daily visitors from across the world than Pidurangala.

Both rocks are popular for tourists exploring the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka. Although you could visit both sites, many only visit Sigiriya Rock for its well-preserved ancient ruins. Pidurangala provides a less crowded and more serene sunrise experience.

As they are located within a short distance of each other, they share a similar awe-inspiring viewpoint. For those looking for the perfect sunrise, Pidurangala is a popular choice due to its stunning panoramic views and the unique perspective it offers of the iconic Sigiriya Rock.

Why PidurangalaIs An Alternative To Climbing Sigirya Rock:

  • Beautiful Sunrises: a more serene and intimate setting with fewer crowds.
  • Panoramic Views: An unparalleled view of Sigiriya Rock emerging from the lush greenery.
  • Culture and history: Very little remains of the monastery that once occupied the rock, but they are still well worth seeing. Sigiriya Rock, on the other hand, has extensive, hugely impressive ancient ruins and gardens.
  • Quicker hike: Reaching the summit is shorter at Pidurangala than at Lions Rock (20 – 30 minutes vs. 1 hour).
  • Affordability: The fee for Pidurangala Rock ($3 for adults) is more budget-friendly than Sigiriya Rock ($36 for adults, $18 for ages 6-12 years). This makes it a more attractive option for budget travellers.

Pidurangala Rock offers a different but equally rewarding experience to Sigiriya Rock. If you have the time, the budget and the inclination, you could do both, but don’t feel you have to.

Pidurangala Rock At Sunrise

Climbing Pidurangala for sunrise or sunset is one of our most recommended things to do in Sri Lanka. The hike offers an opportunity to witness the first and last light of day over the lush green landscape, with Sigiriya Rock in the foreground.

You’ll need to start your ascent around an hour before sunrise/sunset as it rises/falls fast, and you want to ensure you bag a good spot. There can be competition for a seat near the edge, but wherever you are, you’ll get a great view (weather permitting).

We found waiting for the sun to rise with a dozen or so others, really added to the atmosphere of expectation, and we were not disappointed!

Best Time To Hike Pidurangala Rock

The best time to hike Pidurangala Rock is during Sri Lanka’s dry season, December to April, despite these being the hottest months. March is the optimal month for sunrise and sunset due to a lower likelihood of clouds.

Hiking before sunrise will guarantee you the coolest temperatures, although be aware it is still very humid. You will end up hiking in the dark at sunrise or sunset, so be prepared with a torch. The middle of the day can get very hot, and with no shade on the summit, we recommend avoiding this time.

What To Wear To Climb Pidurangala Rock

Whatever time of day you hike in Sri Lanka, you should wear lightweight, flexible and breathable clothes. You are open to the elements on the summit, which can get windy, and you are in direct sun.

We recommend wearing trainers for the hike. Hiking boots are too warm, and sandals do not give toe protection for climbing rocks.

Shoulders and knees must be covered and shoes removed for temple access.

Packing Essentials For Pidurangala Rock Hike

Ensure you take enough water. Single use plastic water bottles are prohibited due to the amount of litter that gets left behind. If you see litter, consider picking it up if you can do so safely.

Ticket payment is by cash only.

Bring a head torch (if hiking at sunrise or sunset), a sunhat, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the breathtaking scenery. The weather can be hot, so dressing appropriately is essential. Remember to bring something to cover your shoulders and knees if you wish to enter the temple.

Things To Do In Sigiriya

Sigiriya is not just all about its world-famous rock or Pidurangala. There is plenty to do for everyone, from thrill seekers to those who want to relax.

* Shop for handmade wooden souvenirs – Several souvenir shops are located along the main street in Sigiriya. They range from pocket-sized carved items to substantial, large wooden elephants. We loved the colourful Raksha masks of Sri Lanka.

* Take a Sri Lankan cooking lesson – Learn how to prepare and cook national dishes before eating them yourself. The process takes you from raw ingredients to producing a meal that will please your senses. It is a great insight for the whole family

* Ride a hot air balloon – See some of Sri Lanka highlights from a different perspective. A 45-minute sunrise flight takes a tranquil trip past sights such as Sigiriya, Kandalama and the Golden Buddha.

* Relax by the pool – Take advantage of the tranquillity of the jungle and take some time to relax. Although not quite the same as cooling off at the beach, spend some time in your hotel pool. Alternatively, buy drinks at the bar at Hotel Sigiriya and make use of their pool with a view of Sigiriya Rock

* Walk or cycle Sigiriyia– Hiring a bike or simply walking are both great ways to explore Sigiriya. We observed many monkeys while we were out and about and found many large rocks to clamber over, giving different views of Sigiriya Rock.

* Take an elephant safari near Sigiriya – You may have heard of the Yala or Udawalawe National Parks while researching elephant encounters, but the Minneriya or Kaudulla National Parks are less than 30 km from Sigiriya. They offer a cheaper and quieter experience with less time spent getting there.

During the dry season, it is worth checking which park the elephants are most likely to be seen before you travel. Elephants tend to congregate near water; some parks will have more of it than others. Jeep safaris pick up from Sigiriya.

📍We stayed at The Nature Park Villa in Sigiriyia. With spacious, fully equipped ensuite rooms and an on-site restaurant and swimming pool this hotel is perfect for a stay on the edge of Sigiryia town. Bikes are available, although we comfortably walked to Lions Rock and nearby cafes.
