Top Places To Stay In Morocco With Kids

Morocco is a destination that combines culture, landscapes, and family-friendly activities without requiring a high budget. Where you stay can impact your adventures in Morocco, so here are our top recommendations for traditional riads to stay in.

Marrakesh With Kids

Riad Cologne II, Marrakesh Medina ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Colourful market in an alleyway in a medina in Morocco. Browsing in the traditional market in Marrakesh is on everyone's itinerary.

Whether you stay for one day or a week, absorbing Moroccan culture in the Red City Medina of Marrakesh is a highlight.

Staying in a traditional riad within the city walls means you are in the heart of the medina. While alleyways are busy, riads are comfortable and tranquil, just a door away with superb views from roof terraces.

A resort stay with kids’ clubs and a water park might be the perfect family option. Staying only a few km from the city you can have the best of both.

Our teens enjoyed weaving through the souks, haggling with vendors, and finding hidden gems. The alleys get crowded and are overrun with scooters if you have young children visit early in the day.

A visit to Marrakesh is not complete without exploring one of the many city gardens, such as Le Jardin Secret, Majorelle Garden and Cyber Park, and seeing the La Koutoubia mosque. Witness iconic snake charmers and monkeys among street performers in Place Jemaa el Fna, which is also a great spot to watch the sunset in Marakesh or a starting point for a horse-drawn carriage ride.

Whether you choose to stay at a family resort outside the city or in a traditional Riad, Marrakesh is a great place to stay for day trips to the Atlas Mountains and the Agafay desert.

We highly recommend staying at the Riad Cologne II, a short walk from Bahia Palace and the main square in Marrakesh. Our family received a friendly mint tea welcome and comfortable, quiet rooms. We ended our stay with a traditional breakfast on the terrace, watching the sunrise and hot air balloons over Marrakesh.

Sahara Desert With Kids

Merzouga Luxury Camp, Erg Chebbi ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A child stood on golden sand dunes in Erg Chebbi desert, Morocco.

Camping in the Saraha desert in Morocco was a highlight of our stay.

You can access the Sahara desert from Zagora or Merzouga. Both deserts offer camping and a range of family activities such as sand boarding, quad bike tours, camel treks, horse rides and Berber village experiences.

With limited light pollution, the Sahara Desert is a fantastic place to stargaze. We were in Erg Chebbi near Merzouga during an impressive meteor storm.

Deserts can reach extreme heat in summer and get cold overnight in winter. We stayed in December with teenagers and found the temperature very comfortable day and night.

We stayed at the Merzouga Luxury Camp on the outer edge of Erb Chebbi. The camp was family-friendly, with 14 glamping tents. Our tent comfortably accommodated our family of five with an ensuite and a hot shower. Breakfast and dinner were superb, with views of the dunes. Activities including sandboarding and a campfire were included adding to the Sahara experience.

Dades Gorge With Kids

Maison Isabel, Tamlalte ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A kid stood in a red rock gorge with a green tree within the Atlas Mountains Morocco.

Dades Gorge offers an unforgettable adventure with kids which should be added to any Moroccan road trip. The dramatic landscape of rugged cliffs and winding roads should also be explored on foot by following one of the scenic hiking trails.

The traditional kasbah or guesthouse with views of the gorge allows families to immerse in the dramatic landscapes during their stay.

Children can spot “Monkey Finger” rock formations, navigate and climb through the gorge, walk along a dried-up river and explore local villages.

A visit to Dades Gorge is also a perfect starting point for hiking the Atlas Mountains.

Maison Isabel is a guesthouse with fantastic views of Monkey Finger Gorge.

Our rooms were traditionally decorated and comfortable with an indoor communal space and terrace overlooking the mountain range. The friendly hosts gave us advice on hiking in the area and offered to organise a guide.

Todra Gorge With Kids

Hotel Tomboctou, Tinghir ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Towering rocky gorge in Morocco, with road access. It is a popular area for rock climbing, hiking and sightseeing.

Todra Gorge is a great place to visit with kids. Families can explore the towering cliffs from below by walking along the shallow river, exploring caves, browsing souvenirs or rock climbing in the gorge.

We also recommend hiking one of the trails above the gorge. Guides can be hired, or you can explore as a family to search for fossils, spot animals and visit nomad villages. Make sure you have a route planned before leaving the Gorge car park, as the path is not well marked.

Mornings are ideal to visit, as the gorge is less crowded and temperatures are cooler.

The guesthouse at the base of the gorge offers easy access to climbing routes and hiking trails. We found the food and comfort a little basic but it is a bargin price.

After hiking, we spent our second night in a traditional Kasbah, Hotel Tomboctou in Tinghir. This family-friendly accommodation was one of our favourite stays in Morocco. It offers hearty meals and cosy Moroccan hospitality.

Ait Ben Haddou With Kids

Auberge Ksar, Ait Ben Haddou ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

City of mud brick houses on a hill. Ben Ait Haddou is a popular traditional Kasbah worth seeing on a Moroccan itinerary.

The fortified city of Ait Ben Haddou is a Moroccan highlight for families. Once an important trading post on the caravan route between Marrakesh and the Sahara Desert it is a great place to explore.

From the narrow alleyways to climbing to the top of the kasbah for panoramic views of the surrounding desert, kids will love the adventure.

For families with older kids and teenagers, look for famous scenes featured in many Hollywood movies like Gladiator and The Game Of Thrones.

To get the most out of a visit to Ait Ben Haddou, families should plan to stay at least one day to see sunrise lighting up the mud build Kasbah.

Staying in the Auberge Ksar guesthouse is friendly and comfortable. It is ideally located with views of the ancient Kasbah from the large terrace. The owner gave us tips on visiting Ait Ben Haddou and cooked us our first Moroccan tagine. Our ensuite family room was comfortable, with extra blankets and breakfast included.

A camel and men on yellow sand with waves in the sea on a popular beach in Morocco.

Agadir is a fantastic resort destination for families looking to combine water activities with relaxation.

The city’s wide promenade is perfect for family walks, camel rides along the beach, or surfing lessons for kids. Families can also explore local attractions like Crocoparc or enjoy a fun-filled day at a water park.

Agadir serves as a gateway to Morocco’s stunning landscapes, with easy access to nearby mountains and waterfalls such as Paradise Valley. Its family-friendly resorts, complete with kid-focused activities, ensure a memorable holiday.

Essouria With Kids

Les Terrasses d’Essouria ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Iconic blue boats in Essaouira fishing habour.

To the west of Marakesh, the charming coastal town of Essaouira is a chilled destination suitable for families.

Its chilled vibe, sandy surf beaches, and friendly medina make it safe and enjoyable for kids. Families can explore the history, watch fishing boats at the harbour, or ride camels and horses along the shore.

Essaouira offers water sports like surfing for older kids, while the bustling souks provide a less chaotic cultural experience than larger cities.

Places Not Worth Staying In Morocco With Kids

While Morocco is family-friendly, some places are less suitable for children due to limited activities, challenging environments, or a lack of amenities. Here are some places that may not be worth visiting with kids:

Errachidia

Errachidia, while a gateway to the Sahara, is a small town that lacks attractions and amenities for families. Its remote location between Merzouga and Fez means tourists do not visit other than to fly in or out of the airport destined for the desert.

Casablanca

Casablanca attracts attention as the largest city in Morocco, but it is not best for travelling families. The modern industrial city lacks child-friendly experiences and traditional vibes found in other places.
