We found this tropical paradise offers a range of family-friendly options where your little surfers can catch their first waves or hone their skills. From the gentle breaks of Mirissa and Weligama, to the more challenging waves of Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka boasts a variety of surf suitable for all ages and experience levels.
Family Friendly Beaches To Surf In Sri Lanka
There are many beaches along the coast. Surfing is one of the top things to do in Sri Lanka, so here are our suggestions for the best surf spots in Sri Lanka with kids.
South-South West Coast Surf – October to April
Surf Weligama Beach
Weligama is known as one of the best spots for beginners and families to learn to surf. The 2 km bay of calm but consistent rolling waves, makes it a great place for kids to learn.
It’s the perfect start for youngsters to build up confidence and skills in surf camps in Sri Lanka. It is surprising how quickly kids can pick up a new skill compared to their parents! But with some instruction, you’ll all be looking for bigger waves.
Although we checked out this beach, the surf was not challenging enough for our kids, who were already confident balancing on a board. We observed some patient local instructors, ensuring kids had a safe and enjoyable experience.
Surf Mirissa Beach
Coconut-fringed Mirissa is a short drive from Welgama. This beach is famous for its laid-back atmosphere and consistent waves. It is a picturesque beach that’s perfect for families.
There are two main areas: one with gentle waves, making it ideal for kids who are new to surfing, and the other requiring a bit more confidence. The beachside cafes and restaurants make it a great spot for the whole family to relax after a day in the water and enjoy the stunning sunsets.
As a family, this was our sweet spot for surfing. We spent hours riding the surf and chilling on the beach. One day, a green turtle appeared next to our daughter’s board. The surf school was located on the beach. They were very friendly and fantastic with the kids. This is definitely one of the best surf spots in Sri Lanka.
Surf Midigama Beach
Midigama is a family-friendly surf destination. It has gentle and consistent waves that are ideal for beginners with some experience and intermediate surfers. Less visited than other popular destinations, it has fewer crowds and offers fantastic surf. Local surf schools provide a safe and enjoyable learning environment.
Additionally, the welcoming and laid-back atmosphere of the area makes it a perfect destination for families to relax while enjoying the waves.
Surf Hikkaduwa Beach
Hikkaduwa is a popular spot for families looking to catch some waves. The waves here are consistent and suitable for beginners. Past the reef break, more challenging surf can be had for families with older kids who have some surfing experience. A few surf camps are nearby, where experienced instructors can help your kids learn, making this another great destination for families.
Hikkaduwa was our first beach destination in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, as we caught the end of the season, the surf was a bit rough during our stay, with storms already upon us. Even though our kids thought it was just what they were after, we listened to the local instructors who recommended more experience was required.
We had an incredible time watching the more experienced surfers ride the waves while we enjoyed some beach time. Our kids were in awe, if not a little disappointed!
East Coast Surf – Late April To September
Surf Arugam Bay
Lastly, if you’re up for a bit of a road trip (about 8-hour drive from Colombo), Arugam Bay on the east coast is one of the best places to surf in Sri Lanka. It is considered their surf capital. While it can get crowded during peak season, the waves are world-class and international competitions are held here.
Arugam Bay is not recommended for complete beginners. While the waves here are more challenging, the adventure is rewarding for those seeking a bit more excitement. It is a great destination for families with older children, that have some experience and are looking to challenge themselves. For beginners, head to Baby Point for an opportunity to learn the ropes over a sandy bottom.
Our adrenaline-seeking kids would have loved to surf here if we were in Sri Lanka in the right season. It will certainly be on the list when we return.
When To Surf In Sri Lanka With Kids
Choosing which coast to surf with kids in Sri Lanka depends on several factors, including your children’s age and skill level, your family’s preferences, and the time of year you plan to visit.
Knowing the right time to surf in Sri Lanka can significantly impact the quality of your family adventure. Sri Lanka experiences two main surf seasons; while monsoon season affects play on one coast, it is making perfect condition on the other!
Here’s how you can make an informed decision:
Skill Level And Age Of Kids
West Coast (South and Southwest): If you have young children or beginners in your family, the west coast (including beaches like Hikkaduwa, Mirissa, and Weligama) is an excellent choice. The waves here are generally mellow and suitable for beginners, making it a safe and enjoyable environment for kids to learn and practice surfing.
East Coast: If you have older kids who are more experienced surfers or teenagers seeking more challenging waves, the east coast, especially Arugam Bay, offers some of the best surf conditions in Sri Lanka. The waves here can be more powerful, making it better suited for advanced surfers.
Time Of Year: Sri Lankan Surf Seasons
West Coast (South and Southwest): The west coast surf season is from November to April, when the southwest monsoon brings favourable conditions. If you plan your visit during this time, you’ll likely have better weather and calm seas on this coast.
East Coast: The east coast surf season runs from April to October, with the peak in July and August. If your trip aligns with these months, the east coast, particularly Arugam Bay, is the best place to be for great waves.
Family Preferences
West Coast (South and Southwest): The West Coast offers a more relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere with plenty of accommodation, restaurants, and activities beyond surfing. It’s a great option for families combining a surf trip in Sri Lanka with other leisure activities. The West Coast is more accessible and closer to major airports, making it a convenient choice for families with young children.
East Coast: The east coast, especially Arugam Bay, is more remote and known primarily for its surf. This might be the preferred choice if your family focuses solely on surfing and adventure.
Ultimately, the choice comes down to your family’s preferences and the specific needs of your surf adventure.
Sri Lanka is also great for snorkelling, hiking, safari‘s, food and culture.

Top Tips For Surfing In Sri Lanka With Kids
Family surfing can be a fantastic way to bond, stay active, and enjoy the beach together. Here are some top tips to make your family surfing adventures safe and enjoyable:
- Choose the Right Beach: If you have young children or beginners in your family, opt for beaches with gentle, kid-friendly waves. Select a beach from our recommendations for the perfect surf spot that matches your family’s skill level.
- Safety First: Prioritise safety above all else. Ensure everyone wears appropriate safety gear, including surf leashes and rash guards. Familiarise yourself with local surf conditions and any potential hazards. Seek out beaches with lifeguards for an extra pair of eyes.
- Find Surf Camps In Sri Lanka: Consider enrolling your family, especially beginners and kids and learn to surf in Sri Lanka. Professional instructors are available in all the top destinations. They can teach proper technique, safety precautions, and help build confidence in the water. We take local surf lessons in each new destination to improve our skills. For a lesson, expect to pay Rs 3000-4000 (£8/$10) per person.
- Use the Right Equipment: Invest in suitable surfboards for each family member’s skill level and size. Soft-top or foam boards are excellent choices for beginners and kids as they provide stability. If you hire a surfboard (included with a lesson), ensure it is sized correctly and in good condition before heading into the waves.
- Practice on Land: Before hitting the waves, practice your skills on your surfboard at the beach or in shallow water. This will help everyone get comfortable with the board and movements. This is a common drill when taking a surf lesson – it’s a great refresher for kids and shows safe tutoring.
- Start Small: Begin with small, manageable waves, especially if you have young children. Teenagers may have the confidence to hit the big waves but no technique. Gradually progress to larger waves as everyone’s skills improve.
- Set Realistic Expectations: Surfing can sometimes be frustrating, especially for beginners. Set realistic expectations for your family. Encourage each other and remember that it’s all about enjoying the experience rather than mastering the sport immediately. Celebrate small victories and improvements, whether it’s standing up on the board for the first time or catching a wave.
- Stay Together: Always keep an eye on each other in the water. Assign a buddy system so no one is left alone. This is especially important for younger surfers.
- Sun Protection: Remember sunscreen, hats, rash vests, and sunglasses to protect your family from the sun’s rays. Surfing can be an all-day affair, and sunburn is no fun.
- Hydrate and Snack: Surfing can be physically demanding. Bring plenty of water and some snacks to keep everyone energized and hydrated.
- Respect the Environment: Teach your family to respect the ocean and the beach. Leave no rubbish behind and educate your kids about the importance of protecting the environment.
- Capture Memories: Bring a waterproof camera or GoPro to capture the special moments and the smiles on your family’s faces.
