19 Things to Do in Edinburgh with Kids

We have visited Edinburgh many times and at different times of the year. This has allowed us to narrow down our favourite things to do with your children that will delight the whole family. Remember, don’t try to squeeze too much into one day; quality wins over quantity!

1. Tour Edinburgh Castle

Perched on a volcanic plug, Edinburgh Castle towers over the city centre and is hard to miss! This historic fortress is a must-visit and you will not be disappointed when you explore the castle’s ancient architecture and see the panoramic view of the city.

You can take a tour or wander freely, learning about Scottish history through the ages. It’s worth stopping to watch the firing of the famous One O’clock Gun (every day except Sunday), although be warned, it is, perhaps unsurprisingly, very loud!

Seeing the Scottish crown jewels in the vault and exploring the prison quarters were the biggest hits when we explored Edinburgh Castle with our kids.

2. Stroll The Royal Mile

The historic Royal Mile is a bustling cobbled street that stretches from the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

It’s lined with shops, restaurants, street performers, and museums – perfect for a leisurely family walk. It can get busy, especially during peak season and festivals, but this only adds to the charm.

The Royal Mile is actually measured in Scots miles that haven’t been used since the eighteenth century and is 107 yards (98 meters) longer than today’s mile.

3. Be amazed at Camera Obscura and World of Illusions

Prepare to be amazed at Camera Obscura and World of Illusions. This quirky attraction is filled with five floors of optical illusions and mind-bending exhibits that both kids and adults will love, including a mirror maze and a giant kaleidoscope.

A panoramic rooftop view of the city is claimed to be the best!

It is located on The Royal Mile, near Edinburgh Castle, and is perfect if you want to take a break from sightseeing.

4. A Family Hike up Arthur’s Seat

Lace up your hiking boots and embark on a family-friendly hike up Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano that last erupted 340 million years ago.

The trail is well-marked and is a relatively easy, one-hour return hike. Take a picnic and enjoy the impressive panoramic views of Edinburgh from the summit.

5. Tour the Palace of Holyroodhouse

A trip to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of the British monarch, is a fascinating experience for the entire family.

Stroll through the stunning State Apartments and enjoy the beautiful gardens surrounding the palace dating back to the 17th century.

6. History Lesson At The Edinburgh Dungeons

For a thrilling and immersive experience for the entire family (recommended 8+ years old), why not visit The Edinburgh Dungeons? You’ll be taken on an interactive, fear-filled journey through Edinburgh’s dark and eerie history in a fun and often funny way!

As you navigate underground chambers and encounter costumed actors, you’ll learn about the city’s gruesome past, including tales of notorious criminals, plague outbreaks, and ghostly legends. It’s a spine-tingling adventure that combines education with entertainment, making history come alive in a way that captivates young imaginations.

The interaction was fantastic, but it is worth being aware that the tour is sometimes quite dark and loud. We were selected to be part of the hideous crimes judged in the courtroom (‘Sweaty Betty’ being our highlight) and it is often still spoken of when we reminisce!

7. Be Captivated At Dynamic Earth

For a hands-on educational experience, head to Dynamic Earth, an interactive science museum that will transport you back in time to witness the creation of Earth.

Journey through the night sky in the fantastic planetarium, including the northern lights and beyond planet Earth.

Kids will love exploring the wide range of areas like the tropical rainforest, diving deep under the sea’s surface and feeling the ground shake in an earthquake.

8. Discover The Real Mary King’s Close

This underground tour takes you through the city’s mysterious and eerie past, offering an unforgettable experience for the entire family. Enjoy a history lesson about medieval city life as you learn who lived and worked in Edinburgh’s old town in the 17th century.

Accessed from the Royal Mile, the tour lasts 60 minutes and is suitable for children over five years old. Our guide made us feel part of the history with her enthusiasm for detailing myths and legends.

9. National Museum of Scotland

Immerse yourselves in Scotland’s rich heritage at one of the best museums in Scotland.

With interactive exhibits, fascinating artefacts, and a vast collection of dinosaur fossils, it’s an excellent place for the whole family to learn while having fun. We spent more than four hours exploring the museum, with plenty for a second visit.

Our kids were really engaged in exploring different sections, including Ancient Egyptians, Inventions, Animals, Fashion, Electronics, Geology and Scottish History. There is even an exhibit with the world-famous Dolly the sheep.

The museum is open daily, and entry is free, although voluntary donations are welcomed; for more information, visit www.nms.ac.uk

10. Greyfriars Bobby

Visiting Greyfriars Bobby is a heart-warming experience to share with kids.

The touching story of this loyal Skye Terrier, who famously guarded his owner’s grave for 14 years, teaches children valuable lessons about loyalty and love for animals.

Our dog-loving kids requested a visit to Greyfriars Bobby’s statue after hearing his inspiring tale.

11. Day Trip To Edinburgh Zoo

A visit to Edinburgh Zoo promises a fun-filled day for the family, making it a very popular thing to do in Edinburgh with kids.

Get up close to over 1000 incredible animals from around the world and take part in numerous educational activities and talks.

We had our first sightings of pandas (no longer housed here) and koalas at this zoo. The interactive talk was a particular highlight for us, with birds of prey swooping overhead. The armadillo stole the show, though, with its amusing walk and long twitching nose!

Maximise your day by checking the feeding and talk schedule times. The daily penguin parade is amusing – where the penguins go for a walk.

12. Explore Carlton Hill

Carlton Hill, an open grass space in the heart of Edinburgh, is a prominent hill offering panoramic views of the city, including Edinburgh Castle.

Carlton Hill offers a great opportunity to combine outdoor exploration with educational experiences with a mix of historic monuments.

One of the highlights for the children was the National Monument, which resembles the Parthenon in Athens. The Dugald Stewart Monument also sparked their curiosity about ancient history and architecture, giving plenty of learning opportunities.

We recommend that you take some time to explore the Nelson Monument with its time ball, which drops in synchrony with the One O’clock Gun at Edinburgh Castle. It is a perfect opportunity to discuss timekeeping and maritime history with kids.

Step onboard the perfectly preserved Royal Yacht Britannia for a unique view of royal life.

Set over five decks, kids will love discovering what life was like for the Royal family at sea.

Exploring the royal bedrooms, the elegant dining room and the engine room bring the yacht to life. Audio guides are available aimed at children and adults.

14. Take A Guided Walking tour

Edinburgh is a walkable city, so history is brought to life on the streets. Guided walking tours can be both enjoyable and informative for all ages. Look for family-oriented tours that cater to children’s interests, such as the Ghost Tour or the Potter Trail.

The Potter Trail is a magical journey that takes you through the city’s hidden Harry Potter connections.

With a knowledgeable guide leading the way, our family followed in the footsteps of J.K. Rowling, discovering the inspiration behind Hogwarts and Diagon Alley.

It was an enchanting experience that combined storytelling and history, making it an engaging adventure for kids and adults who are fans of the wizarding world.

The picturesque Princes Street Gardens separates the new and old town. The Gardens offer families a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets in the centre of the city.

We enjoyed picnicking amidst the lush greenery, letting the kids play in the playground while admiring the view of Edinburgh Castle towering above.

16. Climb Scott Monument

Within the gardens, the Scott Monument is a striking gothic spire.

It provided an exciting climbing adventure for our kids, with panoramic views of the city as a reward for conquering the 287-step spiral staircase.

17. Iconic Three Bridges

Exploring Edinburgh’s iconic rail and road bridges is an experience for kids, especially if they love trains. The Forth Rail Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the neighbouring Forth Road Bridge and Queensferry Crossing offer breathtaking views of the Firth of Forth.

My family and I have crossed all three bridges, with the kids in awe of the engineering marvel. Watch trains pass by while enjoying the stunning coastal scenery from a viewpoint.

18. Beaches and Coastal walk

Edinburgh is a coastal city; visit nearby beaches like Portobello Beach if the weather allows. Kids can let off steam and you can all take a break from being a tourist.

Build sandcastles, paddle in the sea, or take a coastal family walk and tuck into traditional fish and chips.

19. Craigmillar Castle

The impressive Craigmillar Castle was originally a fortified house extended over the years. Local guides are very knowledgeable. Kids can let their imaginations run wild while exploring this historic fortress’s ruins and towers with views of Edinburgh and Arthurs Seat.
