In March, we spent three weeks exploring Sri Lanka with kids. We were enthralled by the vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and thrilling, family-friendly things to do. The weather was perfect, the food was good and we didn’t want to leave.
It is safe to say that there are many things to do and places to visit in Sri Lanka. It sits high on our list of countries we will return to one day.

Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage, pristine beaches, and stunning natural beauty offer an array of exciting and educational activities for families travelling with kids.
There are ancient temples to explore, exciting wildlife safaris to embark on and delicious cuisine to indulge in, and that’s just for starters!
1. Hike Ella Rock and Littles Adams Peak
Hiking in Sri Lanka can be a real adventure with plenty of breathtaking views of the natural beauty and serenity that define the landscapes of this island.
The hike to Ella Rock is a challenging yet rewarding 3-4 hours. On our way to the top, we trekked through tea plantations, dense forests and serene rural villages that provided a unique opportunity to interact with the locals. The summit greets you with a sweeping vista of Ella Gap, a gorge between two mountains, revealing the raw, unspoiled beauty of the region.
Little Adam’s Peak, on the other hand, is more accessible and is a quick and easy hike suitable for all ages. We enjoyed this family adventure, which overlooks the charming town of Ella, with awe-inspiring views at sunset.
Whether you are seeking an adrenaline rush or a peaceful connection with nature, these two hikes offer unforgettable experiences. In our opinion, you should do both!
2. Sigiriya at Sunrise
Watching the sunrise in Sigirya is an extraordinary experience that combines adventure, history, and outstanding views.
You can spend hours exploring the ancient fortress of Sigiriya and taking postcard-perfect panoramic shots from the top. It is a great way to create some unforgettable family memories.
There are two great vantage points from which you can witness the sun’s first rays while taking in awe-inspiring views of the surrounding countryside.
One is from climbing Sigiriya Rock, an ancient rock fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site in Sri Lanka’s heart. The other, nearby and less visited Pidurangala Rock, offers equally stunning panoramic views and costs much less to climb.
We made an early morning start to ensure we caught the sunrise. This had the added advantage of avoiding the midday heat. Watching the sky starting to glow before erupting in a blaze of light was the perfect reward for our early wake-up (as well as giving us an afternoon to spend in the pool!).
3. Wildlife Safari with kids
A Safari offers a sense of adventure and thrill that kids and adults adore. The excitement of spotting wildlife, the bumpy rides through the wilderness, and the opportunity to learn about animal behaviour and conservation is educational and exhilarating for adults and children alike.
Sri Lanka boasts a remarkable array of wildlife. Taking your kids on a safari in one of the twenty-six national parks, such as Yala, Wilpattu, and Udawalawe, allows them to witness animals in their natural habitats.
The experienced guides provide insight into how these animals live, breed and compete for food while ensuring your family’s safety. They are passionate about the welfare of the animals and it is heart-warming to see that they can roam freely.
As a bonus, Safaris in Sri Lanka are a much cheaper alternative to those in Africa!
Our kids were in awe as they saw elephants, monkeys, crocodiles, jackals and an array of colourful birds up close and not behind a fence. You may even see an elusive leopard! We opted for a mid-day safari instead of the popular sunrise/sunset options and whilst it was hot, we still saw lots of wildlife.

4. Iconic Ella To Kandy Rail Journey
Embarking on the iconic Ella to Kandy (or Kandy to Ella!) rail journey in Sri Lanka with your kids is an adventure you won’t forget and for all the right reasons!
This picturesque train journey takes you through some of the island’s most stunning landscapes, winding through green tea plantations, dense forests, and cascading waterfalls. It’s a chance to learn about the importance of railways in Sri Lanka’s history and appreciate the significance of tea production in the region.
Make sure you plan ahead as the journey is up to nine hours long, and keeping younger children engaged can be tough.
Our kids (tween/teens) found the open doors exciting and enjoyed witnessing the natural beauty of Sri Lanka from a unique perspective. Whilst technically not allowed, their highlight was hanging out of the doors while the train was moving. In the interests of safety, we must say, please don’t do this, but if you do, you should exercise extreme caution!
5. Watersports for families
Watersports in Sri Lanka are a ‘must-do’ activity for families, combining adventure and fun in the island’s coastal waters.
The clear, warm, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean are perfect for families to explore the underwater world together. There are plenty of places to hire snorkelling and diving equipment and you don’t have to go far from the beach to see the local marine life, including corals, turtles and dozens of fish species.
For older kids and teenagers, the consistent waves make Surfing in Sri Lanka a popular choice along the Southern and Eastern coasts. Surf schools are available to provide lessons for beginners. We chose Mirissa as our surfer’s paradise, where a turtle also popped up between the boards to say hello!
Whether you are looking for a swim, snorkel or surf trip, Sri Lanka has the perfect beach. If you prefer a more relaxed water activity, paddleboarding and kayaking on serene lagoons and rivers are great options, or swim in a pool for some tranquil family time!
6. Turtle hatchlings
Sri Lanka’s Southern coast, especially Rekawa, Kosgoda, and Bentota regions, are renowned for their sea turtle conservation efforts. There are five species of sea turtles in Sri Lanka: Olive Ridley Turtle, Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle and Leatherhead Turtle.
Learning about turtle conservation efforts and watching hatchlings make their maiden voyage to the ocean is emotional, educational and fun! It’s an amazing thing to witness, especially for families with kids.
Note: Do not handle or approach nesting turtles or hatchlings. Hatchlings need to make the ocean voyage themselves to have any chance of survival.
At both Mirissa and Hikkaduwa, we saw Olive Ridley Turtle hatchlings released by conservation teams just before sunset. The hatchlings left tiny tracks in the wet sand before floating away into the vast Indian Ocean. If you are lucky, you may even have the privilege of seeing a turtle laying eggs on the beach.
7. Hot Air Balloon over the Cultural Triangle
Soaring high in a hot air balloon is an experience that should be at the top of every family’s bucket list. We can highly recommend a sunrise flight – with the best chance of suitable weather between November and April.
Our kids would happily get up early again to repeat this experience.
As you gently float above iconic landmarks such as Sigiriya Rock, the Dambulla Cave Temples, and the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, we gained a bird’s-eye view of the history and cultural heritage of Sri Lanka. You may even spot a herd of elephants if you are lucky!
8. Do A Traditional Sri Lankan Cooking Class
Get the whole family engaged in preparing Sri Lankan vegetables to make a traditional dish to be proud of. Combined with visiting a spice garden, this is a unique, educational and sensory-rich experience.
Children can explore and learn about how various spices, from cinnamon and cardamom to cloves and nutmeg, are grown, harvested, and processed into the food they then eat. Our kids really enjoy participating in cooking classes to gain a deeper understanding of the food and culture.
Many spice gardens are free to attend with demonstrations of alternative ways to use the spices rather than cooking, such as hair removal and insulin regulators. Kids can watch and even participate in activities, including massage and having a cup of Herbal tea.
Tip: Don’t feel you have to purchase from the Spice Garden shop; this can be a fun and interactive way to appreciate the flora and fauna of Sri Lanka.
9. Whale Watching
Whale watching in Sri Lanka is not just a tour but a lesson in appreciating the wonders of nature. The Southern coast, particularly Mirissa and Trincomalee in the Northeast, is renowned for its incredible whale and dolphin populations.
Kids become awestruck when they spot these massive creatures breach and play in the sparkling blue waters. Watch as they gain insight into the importance of marine conservation and environmental awareness from the onboard guide.
We saw blue whales from Mirissa at the end of the season in March. We couldn’t get as close as we had hoped, but they are massive and it was still well worth going on the trip.
10. Explore an Ancient city
Delving into the rich tapestry of Sri Lankan culture through a visit to at least one of the ancient cities is an absolute must-do for families.
These historical sites, including Anuradhapura, Galle, and Sigiriya, provide a unique opportunity for families to immerse in the island’s heritage.
Exploring the well-preserved ruins, discovering the stories behind the ancient temples, and strolling through the sacred Bodhi trees are most definitely worth experiencing.
We left with a much deeper appreciation for the island’s history.
11. Relax on a Beach
Sri Lanka offers palm-fringed beaches along the coast with crystal-clear waters for an enjoyable and entertaining activity to do with your kids. The gentle waves are perfect for children to play in, build sandcastles, and enjoy the warm, tropical sunshine.
There’s something for every family to enjoy, whether it’s the popular tourist spots like Bentota and Mirissa or the more secluded beaches like Unawatuna or Trincomalee.
We explored tidal pools, relaxed on the beach playing cards and took in the breathtaking sunsets.
A beach location is also a great place to base yourself and then take day trips to explore further afield. We appreciated returning to explore the Golden Triangle at our relaxing beachside hotel in Negombo.
12. Stilt Fishing
Stilt fishing is a traditional fishing method in Sri Lanka. You can watch these skilled fishermen balancing precariously on their stilt perches along the coast, demonstrating their age-old fishing techniques.
The fishermen get up for their catch early in the morning and pose for photos throughout the day. You have the best chance of seeing them along the South Coast.
In some fishing villages, kids can try this unique fishing method, making it an unforgettable thing to do, especially if they catch a fish probably for making a curry!
13. Explore a tea factory and Plantation
Visiting a tea factory and Sri Lanka tea fields with kids is a fun and educational thing to do. The island is renowned for its world-famous Ceylon tea, and witnessing the entire tea production process is fascinating and engaging.
Our son chose this tour for his birthday and was happy with his choice. We explored the terraced tea fields, gaining a hands-on understanding of where a favourite beverage comes from.
Inside the tea factory, we watched the intricate steps of tea processing, from withering and rolling to oxidation and drying. It’s like a mini science lesson in action, teaching you about transforming leaves into the tea that ends in a free cup for you at the end of your tour.
Where To Stay In Sri Lanka With Kids
Sri Lanka offers a variety of accommodation options that cater to families’ unique needs and preferences, promising a comfortable and enjoyable stay when travelling with kids. From family-friendly beach resorts to cosy eco-lodges nestled in the heart of lush jungles, here are our recommendations:
Negombo
Negombo is near the international airport and is a perfect location for arrival and departure from Sri Lanka. It is cheaper and has a more relaxed atmosphere than the capital city, Colombo.
📍Best Budget Spot: Hotel Shanelo – A fabulous, low-cost hotel that is clean, comfortable and, best of all, only a one-minute walk from Negombo beach.
Each air-conditioned room has a satellite TV and a balcony with a garden view. Featuring a shower, each private bathroom also comes with a hairdryer and free toiletries.
The hotel has a wellness spa and a restaurant with a great range of dishes for every meal.
📍Best Mid-Range Spot/Luxury: Watura Resort & Spa– Set in Negombo, less than 200 metres from Kammala Beach, Wattura Resort & Spa offers accommodation with free bikes, free private parking, an outdoor swimming pool and a fitness centre.
Each accommodation at the 5-star resort has garden views, and guests can enjoy access to a garden and a bar. The accommodation provides a 24-hour front desk, airport transfers, a shared lounge and free WiFi throughout the property.
Sigiriya
Sigiriya allows families to explore nearby cultural sites while offering the serene, picturesque landscapes of the Cultural Triangle.
Leaving your accommodation after dark is not advised, as elephants often venture into the area. We found it quite hot and humid here and we would advise staying in the shade during the midday sun.
📍Best Budget Spot Palitha Homestay – Possibly the best value accommodation we stayed in during our time in Sri Lanka.
Palitha Homestay is located in Sigiriya, just 1km from Sigiriya Rock.
It has a restaurant and offers complimentary in-room WiFi access and free private parking.
Rooms are fan-cooled with mosquito nets and garden views. The attached bathroom offers shower facilities, toiletries and a spray bidet. There is a 24-hour front desk where bike and car rental is available. Great food, great price, great location – a win all round!
📍Best Mid-Range Spot/Luxury Roo Mansala Boutique Villas– If you have a healthy budget and are looking for luxury, Roo Mansala Boutique Villas are a superb choice for families.
Situated near Pidurangala Rock and Sigiriya Museum. A shuttle service is available for journeys to local attractions, while a bicycle rental service is also available.
The rooms have mountain and pool views and air conditioning with satellite TV, a minibar, a kettle, a bidet, bathrobes, and a desk. Continental and Full English/Irish breakfast options with warm dishes, local specialities and fresh pastries are available each morning.
Ella
Ella is a charming hill-country town that offers a tranquil escape amidst lush tea plantations and stunning scenery. It has a truly relaxed atmosphere and is a great location all year round.
📍Best Budget Spot Travel Rest Inn – Situated in the heart of Ella and a 40-minute walk to Demodara Nine Arch Bridge.
Comfortable, clean rooms, good food and friendly service. All at a great price. We found the location particularly convenient for eating out in the evenings and browsing the many artisan shops.
📍Best Mid-Range Spot/Luxury Tea Cabins– A short walk out of town takes you to the Tea Cabins, a beautifully located guest house with a pool, restaurant, stunning views and super comfortable rooms.
A bit more expensive than some but absolutely worth paying for if you want to treat yourself to something a bit special. The owner is very friendly and knowledgeable about the local area.
Mirissa
Staying in Mirissa is an excellent choice for families, combining the beauty of a serene, palm-fringed beach with a relaxed atmosphere. It is a safe and welcoming destination for parents and children to enjoy together.
📍Best Budget Spot Shanora Beach Hotel – Situated in Mirissa within 300 metres of Mirissa Beach and 500 metres of Thalaramba Beach.
A great option for families travelling on a budget with clean, comfortable rooms and a decent breakfast.
We didn’t eat in the hotel for lunch or evenings, but there appeared to be a good selection on the menu, and it all looked and smelt good, too!
📍Best Mid-Range Spot/Luxury Beach & Bliss Mirissa– A great location in the centre of Mirissa, just a few steps from Thalaramba Beach.
The pool is fantastic and has an amazing outlook of the sea. There is a private garden, free parking, a shared lounge and a terrace.
It has a private beach area and is just 1.4 km from Mirissa Beach and 1.5 km from Kamburugamuwa Beach. American, Chinese, Dutch and British dishes are served at the in-house restaurant.
Best Time To Visit Sri Lanka For Families
The best time to visit Sri Lanka with kids largely depends on the specific experiences you’re seeking and the weather conditions you prefer.
Sri Lanka’s hill country, including destinations like Ella and Nuwara Eliya, can be visited year-round. The weather in these areas can be cooler, so be prepared for varying temperatures.
Sri Lanka has two main monsoon seasons, which affect different parts of the country at different times of the year. Here are two primary options for family travel:
Sri Lanka – December to April (High Season)
This is considered the best time for families to visit the Western and Southern coasts and cultural sites like Colombo, Kandy, and Sigiriya.
During this period, these regions experience dry and sunny weather. This makes it perfect for beach vacations, cultural exploration, and outdoor activities. The sea is calm and great for swimming, snorkelling and surfing.
Meanwhile, the Northeast monsoon runs from December through to February, and, as its name suggests, mainly the Northern and Eastern parts of the island are affected.
Sri Lanka – May to September (Shoulder Season)
If you’re interested in visiting the Eastern coast, this is a good time to do so.
While the Western and Southern parts of the island experience the Southwest monsoon, the East Coast enjoys drier and more favourable conditions.
This is also a time when prices might be slightly lower. However, be aware that sporadic rainfall on the East Coast can still occur.
Tip: No matter what season you visit, wear light clothing, plenty of sunscreen, and drink lots of water!

Getting around Sri Lanka with kids can be an adventurous and educational experience. There are various transport options depending on budget, comfort and distance you wish to travel. Each mode of transport offers its own unique experience.
By Tuk Tuk
Tuk-tuks provide a fun, cheap and flexible way to explore locally, offering kids an exciting and often memorable ride. It is important to ensure your children’s safety with proper seating arrangements.
Tuk Tuks can be hired for any duration and agreements can be made to drive one way.
While we used many Tuk Tuks to travel short distances and for tours around several areas, they are not comfortable, fast, or reliable for longer distances. We advise taking an alternative means of travel for any journey over 30 minutes, especially with children!
By Bus
Travelling by bus allows families to immerse themselves in the local culture.
Navigating through bustling towns and scenic landscapes by bus is often the most cost-effective and authentic mode of transport.
It is, however, worth considering that not all buses are best suited for families as they are often over-packed, hot, travel fast, and whizz past stops. Do some research before booking, and, if you can, go and look at the bus before buying your ticket.
By Train
The train journey through Sri Lanka’s picturesque hill country is a family highlight. We travelled comfortably in second class. The third class is the cheapest, but comfort is spared with bench seats, no air conditioning, and it is often overpacked.
Additionally, but less pretty, the rail network runs down the East coast to popular beaches in the South and across the country to the West and North.
By Car
Renting a car can provide families the convenience and freedom to explore at their own pace, allowing for spontaneous detours and scenic stops. It is the most expensive option and maybe not the safest unless you are used to driving in Sri Lanka.
Drivers can also be hired relatively cheaply for the day or an extended period with a car or minivan. Ask your hotel receptionist for a recommendation.
