As part of a month-long trip across Peru, we trekked the 4-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with our three kids. Overall, we had an amazing experience in Peru, and the trek is among the top memories of our time there.

Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a testament to the ingenuity of the ancient Inca civilization.
The ruins lay overgrown and undiscovered until 1911, when by an American Explorer named Hiram Bingham found them.
It gained the nickname of The Lost City of the Incas and in 2007, Machu Picchu was selected as one of the new seven wonders of the world. This famous landmark is now attracts 1.5 million visitors a year.

The majestic ruins are surrounded by green mountains. Catch it right, and the atmospheric mist of the cloud forest adds to the awe-inspiring vistas at every turn.

4 | Inca Trail Trek Challenge
Trekking the legendary Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is an unforgettable 26-mile journey, following in the footsteps of the ancient Incas.
We thoroughly enjoyed the blend of adventure, cultural immersion and physical endeavour. While it is a challenging hike, the scenery and well-preserved historical sites along the way make it well worth the effort.
Several trek options finish at the Sungate, overlooking Machu Picchu. We chose the four-day Inca Trail, with a tween and two teens, and highly recommend it as a top multiday hike. Our guide, Ruben from Valencia Travel, kept us safe and entertained throughout and was able to answer every question the kids could think of!
5 | Wildlife
Machu Picchu combines history with plant and animal life, including llamas, alpacas, condors and hummingbirds. If you are lucky, you may spot more elusive creatures, such as spectacled bears and pumas.
Our kids were always on the lookout for wildlife as we wandered through the ancient ruins. They spotted many colourful small birds, a couple of coatis and some magnificent condors, but the highlight was definitely the grazing alpacas and llamas.
6 | History Lesson
Spend the day exploring some of Machu Picchu’s impressive stone structures and learning about Inca history first-hand. This open-air museum is a captivating educational experience for children and adults alike in history, ancient architecture, and the vibrant Peruvian culture.
Our tour guide engaged the whole family, bringing the ruined city’s rich history to life as we followed the story through the site.

Machu Picchu offers countless opportunities to capture amazing photographs from sunrise to sunset.

10 | Incredible Stargazing
Machu Picchu’s remote location and dark, clear skies make it a perfect place for stargazing.
We marvelled at the constellations above while listening to our guide tell fascinating tales of Inca astronomy and mythology. To top off our incredible journey, at 4 am, on our way to the Sun Gate of Machu Picchu, we saw the most incredible meteor shower light up the sky.
11 | Year Round Destination
Visiting Machu Picchu is a captivating experience year-round with each season offering a unique charm. The dry season from May to October typically boasts clearer skies and warmer temperatures. Conversely, the wet season is typically from November to April and brings lush green landscapes and fewer crowds.
If you are after a quieter experience, the wet season is an ideal time for adventurous families to explore. Machu Picchu’s timeless beauty and rich history promise an unforgettable journey for the whole family regardless of when you visit.
Getting To Machu Picchu
Due to its remote mountain location, the ruins of Machu Picchu lay undiscovered until 1911. Not surprisingly, getting there is an adventure in itself! This only adds to this iconic destination’s allure. Most visitors arrive via Cusco, the nearest major city, by domestic flights from Lima or other cities in Peru. There are several options available to reach Machu Picchu.
By Train
The most popular route involves taking a scenic train ride from Cusco or the nearby town of Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Trains run daily but should be booked in advance.
By Hiking
Visitors can hike 10km directly from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. More adventurous families may opt for multi-day treks, such as the famous Inca Trail, which combines hiking with cultural immersion.
By Bus
From Aguas Calientes, there are regular buses that go directly to the entrance of the archaeological site.

In our opinion, Machu Picchu is absolutely worth visiting for its unique blend of historical significance, breathtaking scenery, and cultural immersion.
Kids learn from doing. By visiting in person, they’ll gain a much deeper understanding than they would get from any history book about the history and cultural importance of natural wonders like Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu is much more than just a tourist attraction. It’s a destination that enriches the soul, leaving visitors with indelible memories and a deeper appreciation for the wonders of our world.
