Our Best Tips For Snorkelling With Kids
Snorkelling with kids should be a rewarding and unforgettable family adventure, allowing you to explore underwater worlds together. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, here are some valuable tips to keep in mind:
Choose Child Friendly Destinations
Choose snorkelling spots known for calm, clear waters and minimal currents. Lagoons, sheltered bays, and designated snorkelling areas are excellent family choices.
Prioritise Safety
Ensure everyone wears appropriate snorkelling gear, including masks, snorkels, and fins that fit snugly. Life jackets or floatation devices are essential, especially for younger kids or less confident swimmers. Emphasize the importance of safety rules, such as staying close to the shore, always snorkelling with a buddy, and not disturbing marine life.
Familiarise Kids With Equipment
Before hitting the water, let your kids test the equipment in a pool. This will address any discomfort, sort out any fitting issues, and alleviate any fears. Practice breathing through the snorkel, clearing the mask, and using fins in a swimming pool.
Gentle Introduction
Start in shallow water close to the shoreline or boat. Kids should practice putting their face in the water and be able to stand if they need to. Gradually progress to deeper areas as they become more comfortable. Consider using buoyancy aids for younger kids or less confident swimmers.
Respect Marine Life
Teach your kids to admire marine life from a respectful distance and the importance of preserving ocean ecosystems. Emphasize the importance of not touching or disturbing the underwater creatures.
Plan Short Sessions
Keep snorkelling sessions short and engaging, especially for younger kids, to prevent fatigue. Frequent breaks on the boat or the beach can help maintain enthusiasm. Have snacks and water readily available for breaks between snorkelling sessions.
Be Weather-Wise
Monitor weather conditions before venturing out. Avoid snorkelling in windy or stormy weather, as it can make the experience uncomfortable and less safe. Ensure exposed skin is protected from the sun with reef-safe sun cream or a UV-rated protective rash vest.
Encourage Exploration
Engage your kids by encouraging them to identify fish and other marine creatures. Consider bringing a waterproof field guide to enhance their learning experience. Encourage them to ask questions and share their excitement.
Capture Memories
Bring an underwater camera or a waterproof phone case to capture the magical moments. Kids love reviewing their underwater adventures later.
Create A Supportive Environment
Foster a sense of teamwork and mutual engagement among family members. This creates a positive atmosphere for kids to thrive in. Demonstrate enthusiasm for snorkelling; your excitement and confidence will rub off on them.

Best Snorkelling With Kids FAQs
With so many fantastic worldwide destinations for snorkelling with kids, you may find it hard to choose where to go! Whilst we can’t definitively answer that question, here are some that we can.
What Is The Best Age To Start Snorkelling With Kids?
The best age to start snorkelling will vary between kids. Generally, kids aged four to five have the physical and developmental capabilities to enjoy introductory snorkelling experiences. Always consider the individual child’s comfort level and swimming ability when deciding on the right time to introduce them to snorkelling.
Can A Three-Year-Old Snorkel?
Absolutely, a three-year-old can join in on the snorkelling fun with the right preparation! With appropriate-sized gear, calm and shallow waters, and attentive adult supervision, even very young, kids can have a delightful introduction to the underwater world, fostering their curiosity and sense of adventure.
Can I Snorkel As A Non Swimmer?
Snorkelling is possible if you cannot swim so long as appropriate precautions are taken. Kids should always be under close supervision. A floatation device must be worn if they are not competent and confident swimmers. For additional reassurance, take a snorkelling tour and stay close to the boat or shore.
What Snorkels, Fins And Masks Are Suitable For Kids?
Safety should always be the top priority when selecting any snorkelling gear for you and your kids. There are many options, but it is worth investing in well-fitting and good-quality snorkels, fins and masks.
